TAG-Heuer continued to sell the old models with Heuer markings until stock ran out of those dials. When they still had ebauches and other components they would sell newly produced “TAG-Heuer” models with the new logo in place of the old “Heuer” logo on the dial. TAG Heuer and Breitling both have released re-issues of these ground breaking automatic wristwatches chronographs. The chronograph unit is arranged on a side of the base unit having a dial. The chronograph mechanism is based on the venerable column-wheel principle for controlling the start/stop commands. However, it differs from classic Patek Philippe column-wheel chronographs by virtue of a remarkable innovation: The clamps do not control the engagement of a lever-mounted clutch wheel with the chronograph train but instead act on a disk clutch that transmits (chronograph running) or interrupts (chronograph stopped) the power between the fourth wheel and the chronograph hand.

The chronograph hand is also centered on the Tachoscope. This layout ensures excellent readability, regardless of a watch dial’s complexity. The chronographs have afterwards gained the form which they retained until today. In 1934 the Breitling chronographs received the second chronograph button with the function of returning the seconds hand to zero.

The chronograph is much more than a simple stopwatch. Although many owners of today’s fine complicated watches may never use them to do anything more than boil the perfect three-minute egg, chronographs represented a major turning point in the hsitory of time-keeping. The chronograph consists of a cylinder covered with paper, and made to rotate uniformly by clockwork. It is connected electrically with the sidereal clock, which, as it ticks, makes dots on the paper at equal distances by means of a recording pen, and these dots represent seconds.

The chronograph centrally mounted seconds hand is a sporty red and easy to see. The chronograph is operated using a pushbutton in the side of the case at 8 o’clock. The time of day is displayed in an off-centre dial that features a 1 to 31 scale for the date indicator within the hour circle. The chronograph functions with 60-second, 30-minutes and 1/10-second subdails, and also features an easy-to-read date window perched at 4 o’clock. The face is protected by a scratch-resistant mineral crystal with a gentle sapphire coating, which complements the stylish red, high-grade rubber strap. The chronograph usually doesn’t describe the “movement” of a watch, instead this usually describes the “complications” of the watches movements.

The chronograph functions include center second counter, 30-minute counter and 12-hour counter. The calendar is set at the 4 o’clock position. The chronograph function is manipulated by a start/stop button and a reset button. The chronograph measures up to 60 minutes in 1/5 second increments. Alarm hands can be set to indicate the time in a different time zone. The chronograph function is also nearly impossible to read.

The chronograph dials are easy to read and I appreciate the wealth of marks on those subdials. You also get the red framed date window that looks nice with a date disc that is black to match the dial of the watch. The chronograph can record up to 10 hours aggregate time on its minutes and hours counters. And it is always prepared to measure a new time since the flyback function allows the chronograph be reset to zero at anytime while working.

The chronograph second hand appears in eye-catching red, which enhances this model’s exclusive sporty look. The chronograph function offers central chrono seconds, as well as counters for both elapsed minutes and hours. A date display, which appears under a magnifier on the sapphire crystal, can be readily corrected via the crown when required.

The chronograph is a time-recording machine, and it needs something to start and stop the clock. They are light sensors that are in line with each other in the red aluminum Chrony box. The chronograph’s rotating bezel ring, with its own crown, advances the bezel with a crisp clicking sound that spells pure efficiency. The chronograph does not have many features that are available in Michael Hong’s chronograph that we reviewed last week. The application is also covered with branding images from Neosistec.

The chronograph part is equipped with six-teeth star wheel. It passes escapement frequency to star wheel through a 30-teeth gear which located above escapement wheel. The Chronograph is powered by the FM 7000 automatic movement. It also sports a date corrector push-piece at 9 o’clock that enables the wearer to set the date back or forward with ease. The chronograph’s digital readout registered velocities were all over the spectrum when we fired the 1911 across the screens!

The chronograph pushers are located on the left. The “EB” emblem at 6 symbolizes the relationship between the brands. The chronograph functions are direct and straightforward. Another undeniable asset of this movement is the fact that the intermediate wheel lever runs over an extremely wide radius and its travel is very limited. The chronograph seconds hand is white and the tip has been painted red, which makes it extremely easy to read, a nice touch. The constant seconds is located at 3 o’clock, the chronograph minute counter is at 9 and the chronograph hour counter is at 6.

The chronograph start/stop button is at 2 o’clock and the reset button is at 4 o’clock. The case lugs measure 20 mm across. The chronograph minutes are at the 9 o’clock while the small seconds are on 3 o’clock while the date balances the look at 6 o’clock. The chronograph functions are so far separated button-wise from these three basic time functions, that there is no reason for optical signatures for them. Perhaps that power of the Nautilus is that its revision for its 30th anniversary has only reinforced its status as the ultimate sporting luxury timepiece.
